About Meditation & Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a non-faith-based practice of maintaining moment-to-moment awareness of our thoughts, emotions and sensations. Mindfulness is the acceptance of what is happening without judgement and without believing that what we are experiencing in any given moment is right or wrong.

When practicing mindfulness, we strengthen our minds so that we can remain focused on what is taking place in the present moment, rather than ruminating on the past or speculating on the future.
To meditate means to go home to yourself. Then you know how to take care of the things that are happening inside you, and you know how to take care of the things that happen around you.
 ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
Life offers many challenges, many of which are beyond our control. We do have, however, the ability to control and take ownership for our own states of mind--and live a life of reflection and response rather than habitual reactivity. Meditation practice reveals that it is a very natural way to free ourselves from personal discontent, anxieties, fears, hatreds, and all the general confusions that beset the human condition.

Meditation is a means of transforming and sharpening the mind. It is a technique that encourages and develops concentration, calm, emotional regularity, and a clarity to see the true nature of things. With a regular meditation practice you will learn the patterns and habits of your mind, and learn how to cultivate new, more skillful ways of being. Meditation has existed for thousands of years, but only recently has the West noticed the benefits of meditation. Scientific studies are supporting what the practice of meditation has demonstrated for years:
  • improves physical & mental health
  • enhances overall wellbeing
  • promotes better relationships & stronger communities.

“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.”

What can I expect to learn from practicing meditation and mindfulness with a group?

With regular attendance you will learn how to be more attentive in your life; cultivate compassion and gratitude toward yourself and others; and perceive the world just as it is, without judgements and pre-conditions. You will learn the basic biology behind why you think and feel the way you do--and how to change it. Further you will learn how to respond--and not react--to unpleasant situations and emotions that arise in your life. You will learn how to establish a regular meditation and mindfulness practice that will help you in your life for decades to come.
Some of the topics covered in group meetings:
  • Meditation postures
  • Cultivating compassion, attention and gratitude
  • The problem with judgements and opinions
  • Embracing impermanence
  • How to "unhook" from thoughts
  • Exploring "What am I?" and "don't know" mind
  • Working with the breath
  • The importance of expressing emotions
  • Understanding the sensations in the body
  • Clinging vs letting go
  • The ego and the false self

Be prepared to let go of what you think you know about meditation and learn the freedom that resides in letting everything be just as it is...

Meditation & Mindfulness Mentoring

What can I expect from individual mentoring?

Meetings will primarily focus on Zen meditation (stopping/calming (śamatha) and insight (vipaśyanā) techniques), but occasionally other types of meditation and mind-body training techniques will be introduced. In addition, you will have the opportunity to ask questions about your practice and receive objective feedback and strategies for meeting your personal or spiritual goals.

Meetings are via video-chat for 50 mins
Meetings are private and held in the strictest of confidence.
Individual meeting rate*: $65 (up to 50-minute meeting); $35 (for 30-minute follow-up meetings)
Group meeting rate: $150 ($100 for non-profit groups)
(60 minute minimum & within 30 miles from home office) (over 30 miles travel distance will require a higher rate)
*If you are experiencing financial hardship, I can work out a rate or other options that suit both our needs.
Please Note: All individual meetings are currently held via video conference.
